Chapter 9

1The Lord spoke to Moses in the Sinai Desert, in the second year of their exodus from the land of Egypt, in the first month, saying: Β  אוַיְדַבּ֣֡ר Χ™Φ°Χ”ΦΉΧ•ΦΈΦ£Χ” ΧΦΆΧœΦΎΧžΧ©ΧΦΆΦ£Χ” Χ‘Φ°ΧžΦ΄Χ“Φ°Χ‘ΦΌΦ·Χ¨ΦΎΧ‘Φ Φ΄Χ™Χ Φ·Φ Χ™ בַּשָּׁנָ֨ה Χ”Φ·Χ©ΦΌΧΦ΅Χ Φ΄ΦœΧ™Χͺ לְצ֡אΧͺָ֨ם מ֡א֢֧ר֢Χ₯ ΧžΦ΄Χ¦Φ°Χ¨Φ·Φ›Χ™Φ΄Χ Χ‘ΦΌΦ·Χ—Φ₯ֹד֢שׁ Χ”ΦΈΦ½Χ¨Φ΄ΧΧ©ΧΦ–Χ•ΦΉΧŸ ל֡אמֹֽר:
In the first month.Β The portion at the beginning of the Book [of Numbers] was not said until Iyar. [From this], you learn that there is no chronological order in the Torah. But why did Scripture not begin with this [chapter]? 2The children of Israel shall make the Passover sacrifice in its appointed time. Β  Χ‘Χ•Φ°Χ™Φ·Φ½Χ’Φ²Χ©Χ‚Φ§Χ•ΦΌ Χ‘Φ°Χ Φ΅Φ½Χ™ΦΎΧ™Φ΄Χ©Χ‚Φ°Χ¨ΦΈΧΦ΅Φ›Χœ א֢ΧͺΦΎΧ”Φ·Χ€ΦΌΦΈΦ–Χ‘Φ·Χ— Χ‘ΦΌΦ°ΧžΦ½Χ•ΦΉΧ’Φ²Χ“Φ½Χ•ΦΉ:

3On the afternoon of the fourteenth of this month, you shall make it in its appointed time; in accordance with all its statutes and all its ordinances you shall make it. Β  גבְּאַרְבָּגָ֣ה גָשָֽׂר־י֠וֹם בַּחֹ֨ד֢שׁ Χ”Φ·Χ–ΦΌΦΆΦœΧ” Χ‘ΦΌΦ΅Φ§Χ™ΧŸ הָֽגַרְבַּ֛יִם ΧͺΦΌΦ·Φ½Χ’Φ²Χ©Χ‚Φ₯Χ•ΦΌ אֹΧͺΦ–Χ•ΦΉ Χ‘ΦΌΦ°ΧžΦ½ΦΉΧ’Φ²Χ“Φ‘Χ•ΦΉ Χ›ΦΌΦ°Χ›ΦΈΧœΦΎΧ—Φ»Χ§ΦΌΦΉΧͺΦΈΦ₯Χ™Χ• Χ•ΦΌΧ›Φ°Χ›ΦΈΧœΦΎΧžΦ΄Χ©ΧΦ°Χ€ΦΌΦΈΧ˜ΦΈΦ–Χ™Χ• ΧͺΦΌΦ·Φ½Χ’Φ²Χ©Χ‚Φ₯Χ•ΦΌ אֹΧͺΦ½Χ•ΦΉ:

and all its ordinances.Β These are the commandments that relate to its body from elsewhere, such as the seven days for [eating] unleavened bread and for disposing of leaven. (Another version: The commandments relating to its body-an unblemished male lamb in its first year; those which relate to its body from elsewhere- [it must be] roasted over fire, its head with its legs and its innards. 4Moses spoke to the children of Israel [instructing them] to make the Passover sacrifice. Β  Χ“Χ•Φ·Χ™Φ°Χ“Φ·Χ‘ΦΌΦ΅Φ₯Χ¨ ΧžΧ©ΧΦΆΦ›Χ” ΧΦΆΧœΦΎΧ‘ΦΌΦ°Χ Φ΅Φ₯Χ™ Χ™Φ΄Χ©Χ‚Φ°Χ¨ΦΈΧΦ΅Φ–Χœ ΧœΦ·Φ½Χ’Φ²Χ©Χ‚Φ₯Χͺ Χ”Φ·Χ€ΦΌΦΈΦ½Χ‘Φ·Χ—:
Moses spoke.Β What does this teach us? Has not Scripture already said, β€œAnd Moses told… of the Lord’s appointed [holy days].” (Lev. 23:44) ? 5So they made the Passover sacrifice in the first month, on the afternoon of the fourteenth day of the month in the Sinai Desert; according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel do. 6There were men who were ritually unclean [because of contact with] a dead person, and therefore could not make the Passover sacrifice on that day. So they approached Moses and Aaron on that day. Β  Χ•Χ•Φ·Χ™Φ°Χ”Φ΄Φ£Χ™ אֲנָשִׁ֗ים אֲשׁ֢֨ר Χ”ΦΈΧ™Φ€Χ•ΦΌ Χ˜Φ°ΧžΦ΅ΧΦ΄Χ™ΧΦ™ לְנ֢֣׀֢שׁ אָדָ֔ם Χ•Φ°ΧœΦΉΧΦΎΧ™ΦΈΦ½Χ›Φ°ΧœΦ₯Χ•ΦΌ ΧœΦ·Φ½Χ’Φ²Χ©Χ‚Φ½ΧͺΦΎΧ”Φ·Χ€ΦΌΦΆΦ–Χ‘Φ·Χ— בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא Χ•Φ·Χ™ΦΌΦ΄Χ§Φ°Χ¨Φ°Χ‘ΦžΧ•ΦΌ לִ׀ְנ֡Φ₯Χ™ ΧžΧ©ΧΦΆΦ›Χ” Χ•Φ°ΧœΦ΄Χ€Φ°Χ Φ΅Φ₯Χ™ ΧΦ·Φ½Χ”Φ²Χ¨Φ–ΦΉΧŸ Χ‘ΦΌΦ·Χ™ΦΌΦ₯וֹם הַהֽוּא:
approached Moses and Aaron.Β While the two were sitting in the study hall, they came and asked them. 7Those men said to him, "We are ritually unclean [because of contact] with a dead person; [but] why should we be excluded so as not to bring the offering of the Lord in its appointed time, with all the children of Israel? Β  Χ–Χ•Φ·Χ™ΦΌΦ½ΦΉΧΧžΦ°Χ¨Φ Χ•ΦΌ הָֽאֲנָשִׁրים Χ”ΦΈΧ”Φ΅Φ¨ΧžΦΌΦΈΧ”Φ™ ΧΦ΅ΧœΦΈΦ”Χ™Χ• אֲנַΦ₯Χ—Φ°Χ Χ•ΦΌ Χ˜Φ°ΧžΦ΅ΧΦ΄Φ–Χ™Χ לְנ֢֣׀֢שׁ אָדָ֑ם ΧœΦΈΦ£ΧžΦΌΦΈΧ” Χ Φ΄Χ’ΦΌΦΈΧ¨Φ·Φ—Χ’ ΧœΦ°Χ‘Φ΄ΧœΦ°ΧͺΦΌΦ΄Φ¨Χ™ Χ”Φ·Χ§Φ°Χ¨Φ΄ΦœΧ™Χ‘ א֢ΧͺΦΎΧ§ΦΈΧ¨Φ°Χ‘ΦΌΦ·Φ€ΧŸ Χ™Φ°Χ”ΦΉΧ•ΦΈΧ”Φ™ Χ‘ΦΌΦ°ΧžΦ£ΦΉΧ’Φ²Χ“Φ”Χ•ΦΉ Χ‘ΦΌΦ°ΧͺΦ–Χ•ΦΉΧšΦ° Χ‘ΦΌΦ°Χ Φ΅Φ₯Χ™ Χ™Φ΄Χ©Χ‚Φ°Χ¨ΦΈΧΦ΅Φ½Χœ:
Why should we be excluded.Β He [Moses] told them, β€œSacrifices cannot be offered in a state of ritual uncleanness.” They replied, β€œLet ritually clean kohanim sprinkle the blood for us, and let ritually clean people eat the flesh.” He said to them, β€œWait, and I will hear… ” like a disciple who is confident of hearing from his teacher’s mouth. Fortunate is the mortal who is so confident, for whenever he wished, he could speak with the Shechinah. 8Moses said to them, "Wait, and I will hear what the Lord instructs concerning you." Β  Χ—Χ•Φ·Χ™ΦΌΦ₯ֹאמ֢ר ΧΦ²ΧœΦ΅Χ”ΦΆΦ–Χ ΧžΧ©ΧΦΆΦ‘Χ” Χ’Φ΄ΧžΦ°Χ“Φ£Χ•ΦΌ Χ•Φ°ΧΦΆΧ©ΧΦ°ΧžΦ°Χ’ΦΈΦ”Χ” ΧžΦ·Χ”ΦΎΧ™ΦΌΦ°Χ¦Φ·Χ•ΦΌΦΆΦ₯Χ” Χ™Φ°Χ”ΦΉΧ•ΦΈΦ–Χ” ΧœΦΈΧ›ΦΆΦ½Χ:
9The Lord spoke to Moses saying: Β  Χ˜Χ•Φ·Χ™Φ°Χ“Φ·Χ‘ΦΌΦ΅Φ₯Χ¨ Χ™Φ°Χ”ΦΉΧ•ΦΈΦ–Χ” א֢ל־משׁ֢Φ₯Χ” לּ֡אמֹֽר:
10Speak to the children of Israel saying, Any person who becomes unclean from [contact with] the dead, or is on a distant journey, whether among you or in future generations, he shall make a Passover sacrifice for the Lord. and at the bidding of the Lord they encamped.Β As soon as the Israelites encamped, the pillar of cloud would mushroom upward and spread itself over the tribe of Judah like a canopy. 19When the cloud lingered over the Mishkan for many days, the children of Israel kept the charge of the Lord and did not travel.
